About Vicenza
Vicenza: Palladio's Living Blueprint
Vicenza, in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, owes its architectural identity to Andrea Palladio (1508–1580). The city contains 23 buildings designed by Palladio, including the Basilica Palladiana on Piazza dei Signori and the Teatro Olimpico — the oldest surviving indoor theatre in the world, completed in 1585. UNESCO inscribed the city as a World Heritage Site in 1994. Visitors walk between masterworks in under 20 minutes; the historic centre is compact and largely traffic-free.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate within or just outside the centro storico, putting the Basilica Palladiana, Corso Palladio, and the train station within a short walk. The station connects Vicenza to Venice (30 minutes by regional train) and Milan (70 minutes on Frecciarossa), making the city a practical base for exploring the Veneto without paying Venice prices.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The centre is walkable; rent a bike for outlying Palladian villas.
- Timing: The Palladio Museum (Palazzo Barbarano) closes on Mondays.
- Day trips: Villa La Rotonda sits 2 km southeast of the centre — book entry in advance on weekends.
- Climate: Summers are warm (July avg. 26 °C); pack a layer for evenings in spring or autumn.
