About Sapporo
Sapporo: Hokkaido's Grid-Plan Capital
Sapporo, the fifth-largest city in Japan, sits on the Ishikari Plain in southwestern Hokkaido, roughly 90 minutes by air from Tokyo. Planned on a North American grid in 1869, the city is unusually easy to navigate. The downtown core anchors around Odori Park — a 1.5 km green corridor bisecting the centre — and the underground Susukino entertainment district immediately south. The Sapporo Snow Festival (February) draws roughly 2 million visitors each year with ice sculptures up to 15 metres tall in Odori Park.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster within walking distance of Sapporo Station or along the Namboku subway line between Odori and Susukino. The Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade, seven covered blocks connecting central wards, marks the boundary between business hotels to the north and nightlife-area accommodation to the south. Powder-snow skiers often base here to day-trip to Niseko (about 2 hours west) or Furano (roughly 2 hours east).
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The subway network covers three lines; a one-day pass costs ¥830 and reaches all central districts.
- Winter clothing: Pack insulated boots — Sapporo averages over 6 metres of snowfall annually.
- Beer: Sapporo Beer Museum on Kita 7-jo, in the original 1890 brewery, offers free entry to exhibits.
