About Rankoshi

Rankoshi: Rice Fields and Hot Springs at Niseko's Edge

Rankoshi (蘭越町) is a small agricultural town in Shiribeshi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, roughly 80 km southwest of Sapporo. The Shiribetsu River runs through the valley, feeding paddy fields that produce some of Hokkaido's most noted rice. To the northeast, the Niseko Annupuri volcanic range rises above 1,300 m, giving the town direct access to backcountry terrain without the resort-town prices of neighboring Niseko.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels and ryokan in Rankoshi sit close to Niseko-Rankoshi Onsen, a cluster of hot-spring baths fed by geothermal water. Visitors use the town as a quieter base for skiing at Niseko United (15 km northeast) or soaking after a day on the slopes. The JR Hakodate Main Line stops at Rankoshi Station, connecting to Sapporo in about 90 minutes by limited express.

Practical Tips

  • Season: Ski season runs December–March; summer cycling and river fishing peak July–August.
  • Getting there: Rankoshi Station is served by JR from Sapporo; rental cars available at Niseko Station for wider access.
  • Currency: Most small ryokan are cash-only; ATMs available at the post office near the town centre.
  • Onsen etiquette: Tattoos are prohibited at several public baths — confirm policies when booking.
