About Toyako
Toyako: Caldera Lake Town on Hokkaido's Volcanic Coast
Toyako sits on the southern shore of Lake Toya, a near-circular caldera lake in southwestern Hokkaido, roughly 80 km southwest of Sapporo. The lake formed around 110,000 years ago and measures 11 km across. Showa-Shinzan, a lava dome that rose from flat farmland between 1943 and 1945, stands 398 m tall just east of town — one of the youngest volcanic landforms in Japan. The 2008 G8 Summit was held at the Windsor Hotel Toya on the hill above the lake, putting the town on the international map.
Where to Stay
Hotels and ryokan line the hot-spring waterfront of Toyako Onsen, the main accommodation strip. Most properties offer lake-facing rooms and private or shared onsen fed by geothermal waters. Summer brings nightly fireworks over the lake from late April through October. Winter access is straightforward via the Donan Bus from Tōyako Bus Terminal, with connections to Sapporo (about 2.5 hours) and Hakodate (about 2 hours).
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Donan Bus connects Toyako Onsen to Sapporo and Hakodate; no direct train station in town.
- Best season: Late April–October for fireworks; February for snow and quieter onsen rates.
- Day trips: Noboribetsu Onsen is 40 km east; Niseko ski area is 50 km north.
- Currency: Most ryokan accept cash; carry yen for smaller vendors around the lake.
