Kutchan: Hokkaido's Ski Gateway Below Mount Yotei

Kutchan (倶知安町) sits in the Shiribeshi subprefecture of southwestern Hokkaido, roughly 90 km southwest of Sapporo. The town anchors the Niseko United ski area, four interconnected resorts on Mount Niseko Annupuri that receive an average of 15 metres of powder snow per season — among the highest snowfall totals in Japan. Mount Yotei, a 1,898-metre stratovolcano sometimes called Hokkaido's Fuji, frames the southern skyline and is visible from most accommodation in town.

Visitors arrive primarily between December and March for backcountry and groomed-run skiing, though summer draws trail runners, cyclists, and visitors using Kutchan as a base for Niseko Highland rafting and the Shakotan Peninsula coastline 40 km west. The local economy shifted markedly after 2005 when international investment accelerated development of the Hirafu and Hanazono villages; Australian, Singaporean, and Chinese visitors now make up a significant share of winter guests.

• Season: Peak powder conditions fall between late December and late February; lift tickets for Niseko United cost around ¥8,000–¥9,000 per day (2024–25 rates).
