Sapporo: Hokkaido's Grid-Plan Capital

Sapporo, the fifth-largest city in Japan, sits on the Ishikari Plain in southwestern Hokkaido, roughly 90 minutes by air from Tokyo. The downtown core anchors around Odori Park — a 1.5 km green corridor bisecting the centre — and the underground Susukino entertainment district immediately south. Most hotels cluster within walking distance of Sapporo Station or along the Namboku subway line between Odori and Susukino. The Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade, seven covered blocks connecting central wards, marks the boundary between business hotels to the north and nightlife-area accommodation to the south. Powder-snow skiers often base here to day-trip to Niseko (about 2 hours west) or Furano (roughly 2 hours east).
