About Kanazawa

The most convenient base in Kanazawa is the area around Kanazawa Station, served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo in approximately 2.5 hours. Katamachi, the central entertainment district, suits visitors wanting dining and bars within walking distance. Higashi Chaya, the historic geisha quarter east of the Asano River, offers a traditional atmosphere. Most visitors stay two to three nights.

Where to Stay in Kanazawa's Key Districts

Kanazawa Station hotels provide direct access to the Loop Bus network and sit beside the Tsuzumimon drum gate, completed in 2005. This area works well for early arrivals and onward rail connections. Katamachi lies roughly 15 minutes east by bus, close to Omicho Market and Kenroku-en garden — one of Japan's three historically ranked gardens, first opened to the public in 1871. Higashi Chaya preserves Edo-period machiya townhouses along narrow three-block lanes; accommodation here is small-scale and fills quickly. Nagamachi, the former samurai district just south of Katamachi, attracts guests drawn to the Nomura Clan House and earthen-walled streets.

Getting Around

The Kanazawa Loop Bus (¥200 per ride; day pass ¥600) links the station to Kenroku-en, Higashi Chaya, and Nagamachi on a single circuit. Most central sights fall within a 3 km radius of the station. Taxis are available but fare costs accumulate quickly across short hops.

Practical Tips

  • Best season: Late March to April brings cherry blossoms to Kenroku-en; October and November offer autumn foliage.
  • Cash: Smaller ryokan and teahouses often require cash — use 7-Eleven ATMs, which accept foreign cards.
  • Gold leaf: Kanazawa supplies over 98% of Japan's gold leaf; workshops near Higashi Chaya offer short craft sessions.
  • Rail pass: The Hokuriku Shinkansen is covered by the national JR Pass — validate before boarding at Kanazawa Station.
