About Azumino

Azumino: Wasabi Farms and the Japanese Alps

Azumino sits in the Azumi Basin of Nagano Prefecture, roughly 260 km northwest of Tokyo by rail. The city formed in 2005 when five towns merged along the Azusa River floodplain, with the Northern Japan Alps (Hida Mountains) rising to the west. The basin's cold, clear spring water feeds the Daio Wasabi Farm, one of Japan's largest, covering about 15 hectares — a draw that sets Azumino apart from other Alpine gateway towns.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels and ryokan cluster near Hotaka Station on the JR Oito Line, which links to Matsumoto in 30 minutes. Matsumoto connects to Tokyo via the Azusa limited express (roughly 2.5 hours). Cycling is the dominant local transport: rental shops near Hotaka Station provide bikes for the flat farm roads leading to the wasabi fields and Rokusansou garden. Visitors combining Alpine hiking with valley sightseeing tend to base here rather than in Matsumoto.

Practical Tips

  • Season: Spring cherry blossoms peak in mid-April; autumn foliage colors the Alps from late October.
  • Rail pass: The JR Oito Line is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and the Alps Nagano Pass.
  • Currency: Most rural Azumino shops are cash-only; withdraw yen at Hotaka's convenience store ATM.
  • Altitude: The valley floor sits around 550 m elevation — pack a light layer for evenings even in summer.
