About Matsumoto
Matsumoto
Matsumoto sits in a high basin in Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by the Japanese Alps on three sides. The city's most recognizable landmark is Matsumoto Castle — a six-story original keep dating to the late 16th century and one of only twelve surviving original castles in Japan. The black-and-white facade reflects in the surrounding moat, making it a frequent subject for photographers. At roughly 590 meters above sea level, the city enjoys cool summers and heavy winter snowfall, conditions that also feed the nearby Kamikochi valley and Norikura highland resorts.
Visitors come for the castle, but many stay for the broader cultural offer. The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum holds one of the world's largest woodblock print collections — over 100,000 works. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art dedicates a permanent wing to local artist Yayoi Kusama. The central Nawate and Nakamachi streets preserve Edo-period merchant architecture and fill with craft shops and sake breweries. Hikers and skiers use Matsumoto as a base for the Northern Alps, with trailheads accessible by bus from the city center.
Matsumoto Station connects to Shinjuku in Tokyo via the JR Azusa limited express — roughly 2.5 hours. The Alpico bus network links the station to Kamikochi (about 1 hour 15 minutes) from late April through mid-November, when the road is open.
