About Naha

Naha is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, situated at the southern end of Okinawa's main island in Japan's Ryukyu archipelago. The city served as the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom for centuries before Japan annexed the islands in 1879. That history is visible at Shuri Castle — a UNESCO World Heritage Site rebuilt after wartime destruction and again after a 2019 fire — which anchors the city's identity. Naha sits roughly 1,600 km southwest of Tokyo and 600 km south of mainland Kyushu, placing it closer to Taiwan than to Osaka.

Visitors arrive for a combination of subtropical beaches, Ryukyuan culture, and some of Japan's most distinctive cuisine. Kokusai-dori, the city's main commercial street, runs about 1.6 km through central Naha and concentrates restaurants, craft shops, and the covered Makishi Public Market. Sōfū-ji temple, the Tsuboya pottery district, and the Fukushū-en garden add depth beyond the main tourist corridor. The city draws Japanese domestic travelers year-round, along with visitors from Taiwan, South Korea, China, and increasingly Southeast Asia.

Naha Naha Airport (OKA) connects directly to major Asian cities and handles dozens of domestic flights daily from Tokyo Haneda and Narita. The Yui Rail monorail links the airport to Shuri Castle in under 30 minutes. Average temperatures range from 16 °C in January to 29 °C in August, with a rainy season running May through June.
