About Amman

Amman: Roman Ruins, Souks, and the Hashemite Capital

Amman sits on seven original hills — now expanded across nineteen — roughly 800 metres above sea level in north-central Jordan. The city's oldest district, Jabal al-Qal'a, holds the Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a Archaeological Site), where a Roman Temple of Hercules dated to 162–166 AD stands above a free-standing Umayyad palace complex. Directly below, the Roman Theatre seats 6,000 and remains one of the best-preserved 2nd-century theatres in the Middle East. Downtown (Al-Balad) radiates from the theatre's base, mixing gold shops, spice stalls, and falafel counters along King Talal Street.

Where to Stay in Amman

Most hotels cluster in Jabal Amman (1st–3rd Circles) and Abdoun, the city's diplomatic quarter south of 5th Circle. Budget guesthouses concentrate in Al-Balad, a 10-minute walk from the Roman Theatre. The Abdali Boulevard district, developed after 2015, carries newer 4-star and apart-hotel stock.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Taxis are metered and inexpensive; ride-hailing apps (Careem, Uber) operate city-wide.
  • Currency: Jordanian Dinar (JOD); 1 JOD ≈ 1.41 USD as of 2025.
  • Day trips: Petra lies 230 km south (roughly 3 hours by car); Jerash is 48 km north, under an hour.
  • Dress: Conservative dress recommended in Al-Balad and mosque areas.
