About Aqaba

Aqaba: Jordan's Red Sea Gateway

Aqaba sits at the northeastern tip of the Red Sea, sharing waters with Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia — four countries within a few kilometres of each other. The city of roughly 190,000 residents serves as Jordan's only seaport and its sole coastal resort destination. The Aqaba Special Economic Zone (asez, established 2001) removed import duties on many goods, making the city a regional shopping draw alongside its diving reputation. The Gulf of Aqaba holds coral reefs within 200 metres of shore, accessible directly from the South Beach strip without a boat.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster along the King Hussein Street waterfront and the South Beach resort corridor, roughly 5 km south of the city centre. Properties near Ayla Oasis, a planned lagoon development on the northern shore, offer calmer water than the open-gulf beaches. The Aqaba Castle (Mamluk-era, 14th century) marks the historic core near the ferry terminal. Ferries to Nuweiba, Egypt depart from the passenger terminal 8 km south of downtown.

Practical Tips

  • Visa: Jordan's Aqaba zone grants free 30-day entry to most nationalities at the land and sea borders — separate from a standard Jordan visa.
  • Diving season: Water visibility peaks October–May; surface temperatures reach 27 °C in summer.
  • Getting around: Taxis are metered; the airport (AQJ) sits 10 km north of the city centre.
