About Madaba
Madaba: Jordan's City of Byzantine Mosaics
Madaba, 30 km southwest of Amman on the King's Highway, holds one of the oldest surviving cartographic representations of the Holy Land. The 6th-century mosaic map on the floor of St. George's Greek Orthodox Church depicts Jerusalem, the Nile Delta, and over 150 towns in coloured tesserae — a reference point for archaeologists since its rediscovery in 1884. The Archaeological Park on nearby Apostles Street exposes further mosaic floors from the Byzantine and Umayyad periods, including the Church of the Apostles with its personification of the sea.
Where to Stay in Madaba
Hotels cluster around the old town centre, within walking distance of St. George's and the souvenir workshops on King Talal Street where local craftspeople produce reproduction mosaics. The city also serves as a base for Mount Nebo (8 km northwest), where a memorial marks the traditional site of Moses' view of the Promised Land.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Madaba is 45 minutes by road from Queen Alia International Airport — closer than central Amman.
- Jordan Pass: Covers entry to the Archaeological Park; purchase online before arrival.
- Timing: Mornings are cooler for exploring mosaic sites; St. George's Church closes briefly during Sunday services.
