About Amboseli

Amboseli: Elephant Country at Kilimanjaro's Foot

Amboseli National Park, 240 km southeast of Nairobi, sits at 1,220 m elevation in Kajiado County on Kenya's border with Tanzania. The park's 392 km² open plains frame one of Africa's most photographed sightlines — large elephant herds moving across the flat savanna with Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) rising directly behind. Amboseli holds one of the longest-running elephant research projects on the continent, running continuously since 1972 under the Amboseli Elephant Research Project.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters around two zones: the Ol Tukai area inside the park boundary, and the Kimana corridor to the east, which offers more budget-friendly lodge options with conservancy access. High-end tented camps around Observation Hill deliver unobstructed Kilimanjaro views at dawn. Rates rise sharply during the dry seasons (June–October and January–February), when wildlife concentrates near the park's swamps fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro's glaciers.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Daily scheduled flights connect Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Amboseli airstrip in under 1 hour; road transfer from Nairobi via Namanga takes 4–5 hours.
  • Best light: Kilimanjaro's summit clears most reliably before 9 a.m. — schedule game drives at first light.
  • Entry fees: Non-resident park fees are payable via the eCitizen Kenya platform; carry a Mastercard or Visa for the gate terminal.
