About Mombasa

Mombasa: Kenya's Coral Coast Gateway

Mombasa sits on a coral island connected to the Kenyan mainland by the Nyali Bridge to the north and the Likoni Ferry to the south. Founded over 2,000 years ago, the city served as a major Indian Ocean trading hub long before Fort Jesus — the Portuguese fortress completed in 1596 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — defined its skyline. The Old Town district, running along the harbour, preserves 19th-century Swahili and Arab architecture in carved wooden doorways and narrow stone lanes.

Where to Stay in Mombasa

Most hotels concentrate in three corridors. Nyali, directly north of the island, offers mid-range beach resorts fronting the reef-protected Indian Ocean. Bamburi, 10 km north, anchors a longer strip of all-inclusive properties. Diani Beach, 35 km south across the Likoni Ferry, is the most developed resort zone, with powdered white sand and several 4-star resorts. Business travellers typically base themselves on Mombasa Island near Moi Avenue.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Moi International Airport (MBA) receives direct flights from Nairobi (45 min) and international charters from Europe.
  • Ferry crossings: The Likoni Ferry runs 24 hours; allow 20–40 minutes during peak hours for queuing.
  • Climate: April–June bring the long rains; July–August are cooler and dry — the most comfortable beach months.
  • Currency: Kenyan shilling (KES); USD widely accepted at resort hotels.
