About Issyk Kul

Issyk-Kul: Second-Largest Alpine Lake on Earth

Issyk-Kul sits at 1,606 metres above sea level in northeast Kyrgyzstan, stretching 182 km east to west and 60 km north to south. The lake never freezes — its name translates as "warm lake" in Kyrgyz — despite being encircled by Tian Shan peaks exceeding 4,000 m. That contrast draws visitors in every season: swimmers arrive July through August; skiers and trekkers follow from November through March. The shoreline holds over 3,000 Scythian petroglyphs near Cholpon-Ata, carved as early as the 2nd millennium BC.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster along the north shore. Cholpon-Ata, roughly 260 km east of Bishkek via the A363 highway, is the main resort town, with sandy beaches and a direct marshrutka connection to the capital in about 3 hours. Karakol, 390 km from Bishkek at the lake's eastern end, anchors adventure travellers heading to the Karakol Ski Resort or multiday horse-trekking routes into the central Tian Shan. Budget guesthouses and mid-range sanatoriums — Soviet-era spa resorts now repurposed for leisure stays — line both shores.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Shared taxis from Bishkek's Eastern Bus Terminal reach Cholpon-Ata in 3 hours; Karakol takes about 5–6 hours.
  • Best season: July–August for lake swimming; January–February for skiing at Karakol.
  • Altitude: Pack a light layer for evenings — temperatures drop sharply at 1,600 m even mid-summer.
  • Currency: Kyrgyzstani som; ATMs are available in Cholpon-Ata and Karakol town centres.
