About Beirut
Beirut: Mediterranean Capital Between Ruins and Revival
Beirut sits on a peninsula jutting into the eastern Mediterranean, roughly 85 km north of the Israeli border. The city layers Roman-era columns, Ottoman-period souks, French Mandate architecture, and post-civil-war glass towers within a few walkable kilometers. Downtown Beirut anchors the rebuilt commercial core near Martyrs' Square, while Gemmayzeh and Mar Mikhael — two adjacent neighborhoods east of the city center — draw visitors for their 19th-century rowhouses, art galleries, and bar streets.
Where to Stay in Beirut
Hotels concentrate in three bands: the seafront Corniche, the uphill Hamra district west of the American University of Beirut, and the rebuilt Solidere quarter downtown. The Corniche strip offers direct sea views and access to the Raouché Pigeon Rocks, two natural offshore arches roughly 50 m high that define Beirut's western skyline. Hamra suits long stays — dense with cafés, bookshops, and transit connections.
Practical Tips
- Currency: Lebanese pound (LBP); USD widely accepted and often preferred.
- Getting around: Shared taxis (service) cover most neighborhoods for a flat fare; no metro exists.
- Airport: Rafic Hariri International Airport sits 9 km south of downtown, roughly 20–30 minutes by road.
- Best months: April–June and September–October offer mild temperatures below 30 °C without summer humidity.
