About Jbeil
Jbeil: One of the World's Oldest Continuously Inhabited Cities
Jbeil — known internationally as Byblos — sits on the Mediterranean coast of Lebanon, 37 km north of Beirut. Phoenician traders settled here more than 7,000 years ago, and the city gave its name to the Greek word for book (byblos), which passed into Bible. The Byblos Archaeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage property, layers Neolithic foundations, Phoenician temples, a Roman colonnade, and a 12th-century Crusader Castle within a single compact zone near the old port. The medieval Old Souk runs parallel to the waterfront, selling antique coins, fossils, and handcrafted jewelry in stone-vaulted shops.
Where to Stay in Jbeil
Most hotels concentrate in two areas: the Old Town district, within walking distance of the archaeological site and harbor, and the newer Amchit Road corridor to the north, where larger properties offer sea-facing rooms. Boutique guesthouses inside restored Ottoman-era buildings fill quickly during summer. Weekend visitors from Beirut arrive heavily in July and August, so advance booking from late June onward is advisable.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Shared service taxis (LBP-denominated) depart from Cola transport hub in Beirut; journey takes roughly 45–60 minutes depending on traffic.
- Best months: April–June and September–October offer mild temperatures and thinner crowds than the summer peak.
- Site hours: The Byblos Archaeological Site opens daily; carry cash as card terminals are unreliable at the ticket kiosk.
- Currency: Lebanese pound is the local tender; USD is widely accepted at hotels and restaurants.
