About Klaipėda
Klaipėda: Lithuania's Baltic Port and Gateway to the Curonian Spit
Klaipėda sits at the mouth of the Nemunas delta on the Baltic Sea, roughly 310 km west of Vilnius. Lithuania's third-largest city and only commercial seaport, it spent centuries under Prussian and German administration as Memel before reuniting with Lithuania in 1923. That layered history shows in the Old Town (Altstadt), where half-timbered facades, cobbled lanes around Teatro aikštė (Theatre Square), and cast-iron street sculptures coexist with Soviet-era apartment blocks closer to the port.
Where to Stay in Klaipėda
Most hotels cluster in the Old Town on the western bank of the Danė River, within walking distance of the ferry terminal. A 10-minute passenger ferry crossing connects the city to Smiltynė and the Curonian Spit — a 98-km sand-dune peninsula shared with Russia and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Visitors arriving by ferry from Germany or Sweden dock at the international terminal on the southern edge of the port district.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The Old Town is compact and walkable; buses and minibuses cover the broader city.
- Ferry to the Spit: Passenger ferries to Smiltynė run frequently and cost under €2; car ferries require advance booking in summer.
- Season: July and August bring the highest temperatures (avg 20 °C) and the Klaipėda Sea Festival, Lithuania's largest annual outdoor event.
- Language: Lithuanian is official; German is understood in some Old Town businesses given the city's heritage.
