About Vilnius
Vilnius: Baroque Capital on the Neris River
Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, sits at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers, roughly 300 km from the Baltic Sea. Founded by Duke Gediminas around 1323, the Old Town covers 3.6 sq km — one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Gediminas Castle Tower rises 48 metres above the city and offers a clear view over terracotta rooftops and 65 surviving churches, including the Church of St. Anne, a 16th-century Gothic landmark built entirely in red brick.
Where to Stay in Vilnius
Most hotels cluster inside or just outside the Old Town walls. Užupis, a self-declared artists' republic east of the old city, draws boutique properties and independent cafés. Naujamiestis (New Town), 10 minutes on foot from Cathedral Square, carries a growing stock of design hotels and apartments preferred by long-stay visitors. Budget travellers find options along Pylimo gatvė, close to the main bus station.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The Old Town is walkable; trams and trolleybuses cover outer districts for under €1 per ride.
