About Cherating
Cherating: East Coast Beach Village on Pahang's Shore
Cherating sits on the South China Sea coast of Pahang, roughly 47 km north of Kuantan. The village earned its reputation as Malaysia's first backpacker destination in the 1970s, and the long curved bay still draws travelers seeking calm water, leatherback turtle nesting sites, and a slower pace than Langkawi or Penang. Club Med Cherating, one of the chain's oldest Asian resorts, anchors the northern end of the beach. The bay faces east, making it flat and swimmable from March through October; the northeast monsoon from November to February brings swells that attract surfers to Kelab Cherating and the river mouth break.
Where to Stay
Accommodation ranges from wooden chalets along the beach road to mid-range resorts set back among casuarina trees. Cherating Beach itself is the main address — properties within 500 m of the sand command higher rates during the dry season. Visitors interested in turtle conservation can time stays between May and September when green turtles nest at Chendor Beach, 3 km north.
Practical Tips
- Getting here: Buses from Kuantan take about 1 hour; the nearest airport is Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport (KUA) in Kuantan, 50 km south.
- Best season: March to October for swimming; November to February for surfing.
- Currency: Malaysian Ringgit (MYR); most small guesthouses are cash-only.
- Turtle nesting: Book guided night tours through licensed operators only — unauthorized lighting disturbs nesting females.
