About Melaka
Melaka: UNESCO Port City on the Strait
Melaka (Malacca) sits on Malaysia's southwest coast, roughly 148 km south of Kuala Lumpur. Founded as a trading sultanate around 1400, it became one of Southeast Asia's wealthiest ports, drawing Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonisers in succession. That layered history is visible on every street: the Dutch-built Stadthuys (1650) faces Christ Church across Dutch Square, while Jonker Street in Chinatown runs a weekend night market selling Peranakan antiques and cendol. UNESCO inscribed the Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca — Melaka and George Town — as a World Heritage Site in 2008.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster around Heeren Street and the riverbanks of the Melaka River, placing guests within walking distance of the heritage core. Boutique shophouse conversions dominate the old town, while mid-range and business hotels line Jalan Bendahara and the edges of Bukit China, the largest Chinese cemetery outside China at over 25 hectares.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Express buses from KL TBS terminal reach Melaka Sentral in roughly 2 hours; the fare runs under RM15.
- Getting around: Trishaws are the signature way to navigate Jonker Street; ride-hailing apps cover longer distances.
- Climate: Melaka sits outside the main monsoon belt; rain is possible year-round but rarely disrupts a full day.
- Weekends vs weekdays: Jonker Street night market runs Friday–Sunday; arrive before 8 pm for parking.
