About Malacca

Malacca: UNESCO Port City on the Strait

Malacca (Melaka) sits on Malaysia's southwest coast, 148 km south of Kuala Lumpur. Founded as a Malay sultanate around 1400, it passed through Portuguese (1511), Dutch (1641), and British (1824) rule — each layer visible in the streetscape today. A Famosa fortress, the Stadthuys Dutch administrative building, and St. Paul's Church ruins stand within a short walk of each other on Bukit St. Paul. UNESCO inscribed Malacca and George Town together in 2008 for their multicultural heritage.

Where to Stay

Most visitors base themselves in the UNESCO Heritage Zone, centred on Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat) in Chinatown, where Peranakan shophouses converted into boutique hotels offer rooms from around MYR 150/night. The Heeren Street corridor and Bukit China area add quieter alternatives within walking distance of the main sights. River-view properties along the Malacca River place guests 5 minutes on foot from the Maritime Museum.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Frequent express buses from KL TBS terminal reach Malacca Sentral in 2 hours; taxis into the heritage zone add 15 minutes.
  • Getting around: The compact heritage core is walkable; cycle-rickshaws (trishaw) cover short hops.
  • Weather: November–January brings the northeast monsoon with afternoon showers; March–October is drier.
  • Food: Jonker Street's weekend night market (Friday–Sunday) concentrates Peranakan, Chinese, and Malay street food in one block.
