About Gozo
Gozo: Malta's Quieter Second Island
Gozo (Maltese: Għawdex) is the second-largest island of the Maltese archipelago, roughly 14 km long and separated from Malta by a 6 km channel crossed by ferry from Ċirkewwa. The island's geology produces dramatic cliffs, notably at Ta' Ċenċ on the southern coast, and the inland valley of Wied il-Mielaħ frames a natural limestone arch above the sea. The Ggantija Temples near Xagħra, dated to around 3600–3200 BCE, predate Stonehenge and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the factual anchor that draws archaeology-focused travellers.
Where to Stay in Gozo
Most hotels cluster around Victoria (Rabat), the capital at the island's centre, and the fishing village of Marsalforn on the north coast. Xlendi Bay on the southwest offers smaller guesthouses above a sheltered inlet. The ferry port of Mġarr has a handful of waterfront properties convenient for day-trippers crossing from Malta.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Gozo Fast Ferry from Valletta Harbour takes 45 minutes; the Ċirkewwa–Mġarr car ferry runs every 45–75 minutes.
- Getting around: Renting a car or quad bike is practical — public buses cover main villages but infrequently.
- Best season: May–June and September–October offer mild temperatures (22–27 °C) without August crowds.
- Currency: Euro (EUR); most hotels and restaurants accept cards.
