About Acapulco

The most convenient bases in Acapulco are Diamante, the newer resort strip south of the bay with 4- and 5-star properties; Zona Dorada along Costera Miguel Alemán for mid-range hotels within walking distance of the Zócalo; and Centro, the historic core near the 1930s cathedral and Mercado Central. Most visitors stay three to five nights; Acapulco International Airport sits 26 km east of the bay.

Where to Stay in Each Zone

Diamante occupies the coast between Playa Revolcadero and Puerto Marqués, roughly 12 km south of Centro. Large all-inclusive resorts and private beach clubs define this stretch — suited to families and travellers who prefer minimal off-resort movement. Zona Dorada runs along Avenida Costera Miguel Alemán from Parque Papagayo toward the naval base; hotels range from mid-range to upscale, and the La Quebrada cliff divers perform nightly at 19:30, 21:30, and 22:30 from a point 400 metres west of the strip. Centro near the Zócalo suits budget travellers who want access to local markets and the Fuerte de San Diego, a 17th-century fort that now houses a regional history museum.

Getting Around

Taxis and ride-hail apps move travellers between zones most efficiently; the 12 km Costera corridor takes 20–35 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. City buses run the full length of Costera Miguel Alemán for a few pesos but are considerably slower. Acapulco International Airport (ACA) has no rail link; private transfers from Diamante take roughly 30 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Dry season: November to April brings clearer skies; heavy rains fall June to October.
  • Currency: Pesos are standard; card acceptance is inconsistent outside resort zones.
  • Beach safety: Check red or yellow flag conditions before swimming at open-bay beaches.
  • La Quebrada shows: The viewing platform at the cliff charges a small entry fee; arrive 20 minutes early for a front-row position.
