About Zihuatanejo

Zihuatanejo: Pacific Fishing Village Turned Resort Coast

Zihuatanejo sits on a sheltered bay in Guerrero state, roughly 240 km northwest of Acapulco on Mexico's Pacific coast. The town retains the character of the fishing village it was before the 1970s, when the Mexican government developed neighboring Ixtapa as a planned resort zone 5 km to the north. That separation works in Zihuatanejo's favor: visitors get international-standard hotels alongside cobblestone streets, fresh seafood markets on Playa Municipal, and independent restaurants in the La Madera and La Ropa neighborhoods.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster along Playa La Ropa, a 2 km arc of calm water that is the widest beach in the bay, and in the town center near Paseo del Pescador. Boutique properties on the hillsides above La Madera offer bay views; larger all-inclusive resorts line the Ixtapa corridor. The Zihuatanejo–Ixtapa International Airport (ZIH) receives direct flights from several U.S. cities and sits 15 km from the town center.

Practical Tips

  • Beach access: Playa La Ropa is the calmest bay beach; Playa Las Gatas is reachable by water taxi from the municipal pier.
  • Seasonality: Dry season runs November through April; afternoons stay warm at 28–31 °C.
  • Getting around: Taxis and colectivos connect Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa for under 50 MXN.
