About Cabo Pulmo
Cabo Pulmo: Gateway to a Living Coral Reef
Cabo Pulmo sits on the eastern cape of Baja California Sur, roughly 60 km northeast of San José del Cabo along a partially unpaved road. The village of fewer than 200 residents anchors one of North America's oldest living coral reefs — a 20,000-year-old hard coral system protected since 1995 as a Mexican national marine park and recognized under UNESCO's Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California designation. Biomass within the reef increased by more than 460% between 1999 and 2009 after commercial fishing was banned, making it one of the most documented marine recovery cases on record.
Where to Stay
Accommodation runs to small eco-lodges, solar-powered casitas, and dive-oriented guesthouses clustered along the beachfront. Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort and independent bungalow operators represent the main options. The nearest town with ATMs and supermarkets is Los Barriles, approximately 40 km north on Highway 1.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the final unpaved stretch from Highway 1.
- Diving season: The reef dives best April–November; the El Vencedor site draws bull shark aggregations November–March.
- Cash: No bank or ATM exists in the village — carry pesos from Los Barriles or La Paz.
- Connectivity: Mobile signal is limited; most lodges offer Wi-Fi with restricted bandwidth.
