About Loreto

Loreto: Baja's Oldest Colonial Capital on the Sea of Cortez

Loreto, founded in 1697 as the first permanent Spanish settlement in the Californias, sits on the western shore of the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur. The Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó — still standing on the central plaza — predates the California mission chain by 72 years and anchors the compact historic core. The Sierra de la Giganta rises sharply to the west, funneling visitors between desert peaks and turquoise water.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster within a few blocks of the Malecón, the waterfront promenade facing Isla del Carmen and Isla Coronado. The Loreto Bay development, 8 km south near Nopoló, adds resort-style properties with golf and beach access. Boutique guesthouses on Calle Francisco Madero near the mission suit travelers focused on kayaking, sport fishing, and whale-watching in the Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto, a UNESCO World Heritage marine zone protecting 206,000 hectares.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Loreto International Airport (LTO) receives direct flights from Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Calgary.
  • Best season: October through April offers calm seas and mild temperatures averaging 24 °C.
  • Currency: Most small businesses accept pesos only; carry cash for the market on Salvatierra street.
  • Water activities: Book whale-watching tours in advance for January–March gray whale season in nearby Bahía Magdalena.
