About Tangier
Tangier: Gateway Between Two Continents
Tangier sits at the northwestern tip of Morocco, just 14 km across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain. That proximity has shaped the city for centuries — Phoenicians, Romans, Portuguese, and later an international diplomatic zone governed it before Morocco's independence in 1956. The Medina climbs steeply above the port, its narrow lanes opening onto the Grand Socco square, where the old city meets the French-built Ville Nouvelle. The Kasbah crowns the hill, housing the 17th-century sultan's palace, now the Museum of Moroccan Arts.
Where to Stay in Tangier
Most hotels concentrate in two zones. The Ville Nouvelle along Boulevard Mohammed VI offers mid-range and 4-star properties within walking distance of the ferry terminal. The Medina and Kasbah quarter hold riads and boutique guesthouses favored by travelers wanting the older street pattern. The beach district of Malabata, 3 km east of the port, hosts larger resort-style hotels along the bay.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ferries from Tarifa, Spain reach Tangier Med port in 35 minutes; the port is 45 km east of the city center — allow 1 hour transfer.
- Rail access: Tangier Ville station connects to Casablanca in 4 hours 45 minutes via the Al Boraq high-speed line, launched 2018.
- Currency: Moroccan dirham (MAD); exchange at banks near the Grand Socco.
- Climate: Mild year-round; July–August averages 27 °C.
