About Bazaruto

Bazaruto: Coral Archipelago off Mozambique's Southern Coast

The Bazaruto Archipelago sits roughly 14 km off the coast of Vilanculos in Inhambane Province, comprising six main islands — Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, Banque, and Shell Island. Declared a national park in 1971, the archipelago protects one of the last viable populations of dugong in the western Indian Ocean, alongside whale sharks, manta rays, and five species of marine turtle. Freshwater lakes on Bazaruto Island itself support Nile crocodiles, an unusual find on an Indian Ocean island.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Accommodation on the archipelago ranges from tented beach lodges on Benguerra Island to larger eco-resorts on Bazaruto Island. No roads connect the islands — all inter-island travel is by motorboat or light aircraft. Charter flights operate from Vilanculos Airport (VNX), approximately 700 m from the town centre, with short hops of 10–15 minutes reaching the main lodges. Day visitors can arrange dhow trips from Vilanculos.

Practical Tips

  • Best season: May to November brings dry, calm conditions; cyclone risk rises December through March.
  • Entry: Mozambique visas are available on arrival for most nationalities; confirm current requirements before travel.
  • Currency: Mozambican metical (MZN); lodge stays typically priced in USD.
  • Diving: Water visibility averages 20–30 m on the outer reefs during the dry season.
