About Praia do Tofo
Praia do Tofo: Whale Shark Coast of Southern Mozambique
Praia do Tofo sits on the Inhambane Peninsula, roughly 22 km east of Inhambane town and about 470 km north of Maputo by road. The village built its reputation on marine megafauna: whale sharks frequent the warm Indian Ocean waters year-round, and manta rays congregate along the nearby Manta Reef between October and March. Padi-certified dive operators line the main beach road, making the area one of southern Africa's most accessible open-water dive destinations.
Where to Stay in Tofo
Accommodation ranges from backpacker camps on the sand to small eco-lodges above the dune line. Most properties cluster along Tofo Beach Road or on the headland overlooking the bay. The adjacent village of Tofinho, 3 km south, offers quieter options and consistent surf at the point break.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Chapa minibuses run from Inhambane town daily; the ride takes about 35 minutes.
- Best diving months: October–April for manta rays; whale sharks are present most of the year but peak June–September.
- Currency: Mozambican metical (MZN); card acceptance is limited — carry cash from Inhambane.
- Malaria: The region is endemic — take prophylaxis and pack repellent.
