About Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park: Salt Pan Wildlife Destination

Etosha National Park covers 22,270 km² of northern Namibia, anchored by the Etosha Pan — a vast salt flat stretching roughly 130 km east to west. Declared a game reserve in 1907, the park holds one of Africa's most concentrated populations of black rhinoceros, alongside lion, leopard, elephant, and cheetah. The pan's white calcrete surface creates a stark backdrop that makes wildlife sightings unusually clear, particularly during the dry season (May–October) when animals converge on waterholes.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Accommodation clusters around three NWR rest campsOkaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni — each with floodlit waterholes viewable at night. Private lodges line the park's southern boundary along the C38 road, including properties near Andersson Gate, the main western entrance. Most visitors fly into Windhoek's Hosea Kutako Airport (440 km south) and drive north via the B1 highway, with the transfer taking roughly four to five hours.

Practical Tips

  • Season: Dry-season months (June–September) offer the densest waterhole activity.
  • Self-drive: A standard 2WD vehicle suffices on the park's gravel roads.
  • Gates: Anderson and Von Lindequist gates close at sunset; plan arrivals accordingly.
  • Permits: Book NWR camps well in advance for peak season (July–August).
