About Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei: Red Dunes of the Namib Desert
Sossusvlei sits roughly 340 km south of Windhoek inside Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia's largest protected area. The salt and clay pan is flanked by some of Earth's tallest sand dunes — Dune 45 rises 170 m above the valley floor and is counted among the most photographed dunes on the continent. Big Daddy, at approximately 325 m, draws hikers each morning before heat makes the climb impractical. The dunes owe their deep terracotta colour to iron oxide coating ancient sand grains, some estimated at five million years old.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Accommodation clusters along the Sesriem access corridor, the only public gateway into the pan area. Lodges and campsites range from tented camps at the Sesriem Campsite — the sole option inside the park gate for early gate access — to private lodges on the surrounding conservancy land. Gate hours restrict non-lodging visitors; only guests staying inside the park may enter before sunrise, which is critical for photography and cooler hiking conditions.
Practical Tips
- Access: Sesriem gate opens at sunrise; book inside-park accommodation well in advance for pre-dawn entry.
- Season: May to September offers cooler temperatures; summer months (November–February) regularly exceed 40 °C.
- Transport: A 4WD vehicle is required for the final 5 km track to the pan itself.
- Nearby: Dead Vlei, a white clay pan with ancient camel thorn trees, sits a 1 km walk from the Sossusvlei car park.
