About León
León: Cathedral City at the Foot of Nicaragua's Volcanoes
León, founded in 1610 after its original site was abandoned near Volcán Momotombo, sits 90 km northwest of Managua in Nicaragua's Pacific lowlands. The city's Catedral de la Asunción — the largest cathedral in Central America — was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 alongside the cathedral of Granada. León is also Nicaragua's intellectual capital, home to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua, founded in 1812. The Museo de la Revolución on Parque Central documents the Sandinista uprising that ended in 1979, drawing history-focused travelers from across the region.
Where to Stay in León
Most hotels concentrate within six blocks of Parque Central, placing guests within walking distance of the cathedral and the covered Mercado Central. Budget guesthouses line the streets north toward Barrio El Calvario; mid-range properties cluster near Calle Rubén Darío, named for Nicaragua's national poet who was born here in 1867. The city draws backpackers, student travelers, and those using León as a base for volcano boarding on Cerro Negro, 20 km to the east.
