About Ometepe

Ometepe: Volcanic Island in Lake Nicaragua

Ometepe sits inside Lake Nicaragua (Lago Cocibolca), shaped by two volcanoes: Volcán Concepción (1,610 m) and Volcán Maderas (1,394 m). The island measures roughly 276 km² and is connected to the mainland by ferry from San Jorge, a crossing of about 1 hour. Pre-Columbian petroglyphs dot the slopes of Maderas, and the Museo El Ceibo in Altagracia holds basalt statues carved by the Nahuatl-speaking peoples who inhabited the island before Spanish contact.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses concentrate in Moyogalpa (the main ferry port) and along the road toward Santo Domingo beach on the isthmus between the two volcanoes. Budget hostels and small eco-lodges dominate the market; larger properties sit near the shoreline with views across the lake toward the Rivas peninsula.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Ferries depart San Jorge roughly every 1–2 hours; the crossing takes 45–75 minutes depending on vessel.
  • Getting around: Motorcycle taxi or hired bicycle covers the Concepción loop; the Maderas side requires a 4WD or guided hike.
  • Best season: The dry season runs December–April; trails on Maderas are passable but muddy year-round.
  • Currency: Córdoba (NIO); US dollars are widely accepted at hotels.
