About Muscat

Muscat: Gulf Capital Between the Hajar Mountains and the Arabian Sea

Muscat, the capital of Oman, sits along a 40-kilometre coastal strip where the Hajar Mountains drop sharply to the Gulf of Oman. The city is divided into distinct districts: Muttrah holds the 400-year-old souq and a working corniche lined with dhow harbours; Old Muscat contains the 16th-century Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, built by the Portuguese after 1507; and Qurum and Al Khuwair form the modern commercial and diplomatic spine. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, completed in 2001 and capable of holding 20,000 worshippers, anchors the western district of Bausher and is open to non-Muslim visitors on weekday mornings.

Where to Stay in Muscat

Hotels cluster around three corridors. Muttrah suits travellers who want walkable access to the souq and waterfront. Qurum Beach and the adjacent Shatti Al Qurum strip host mid-range and upscale beach properties within 10 km of the city centre. Al Khuwair, close to Muscat International Airport (MCT), is practical for short layovers — the airport sits roughly 32 km west of Muttrah.

Practical Tips

  • Dress code: Shoulders and knees should be covered when visiting mosques and the souq.
  • Currency: Omani Rial (OMR); 1 OMR ≈ 2.60 USD as of 2025.
  • Climate: October through March brings daytime highs around 26–30 °C; summers exceed 40 °C.
  • Transport: Metered taxis and ride-hailing apps operate city-wide; no metro exists yet.
