About Nazca
Nazca: Gateway to the Desert Geoglyphs
Nazca sits in the Ica Region of southern Peru, roughly 450 km south of Lima along the Pan-American Highway. The city of around 60,000 people is defined by one thing above all: the Nazca Lines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising over 300 geoglyphs etched into the desert pampa between 500 BCE and 500 CE. Figures include a 93-metre hummingbird, a 180-metre pelican, and dozens of geometric trapezoids stretching for kilometres. Overflights from Nazca Airport (NZC) remain the primary way to view them, with small-plane tours departing daily.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along Calle Bolognesi and the streets surrounding Plaza de Armas. Budget guesthouses sit within walking distance of the mirador tower on the Pan-American Highway, while mid-range properties offer pools — practical given daytime temperatures that regularly exceed 30 °C. The María Reiche Museum, dedicated to the German mathematician who mapped the lines from the 1940s onward, is a short taxi ride north of the centre.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Direct buses from Lima take 7–8 hours; Cruz del Sur and Oltursa run overnight services.
- Overflight booking: Reserve flights at least a day ahead during July–August high season; morning slots have calmer air.
- Climate: The Nazca Desert receives under 4 mm of rainfall annually — pack sunscreen and a hat year-round.
- Altitude: Nazca sits at roughly 520 metres; no acclimatisation needed before visiting Cusco further south.
