Paracas: Gateway to the Paracas National Reserve

Paracas sits on Peru's southern Pacific coast, 261 km south of Lima along the Panamericana Sur. The town borders the Paracas National Reserve, a 335,000-hectare protected area of red desert cliffs, turquoise bays, and flamingo-dotted shallows. The Ballestas Islands, reached by a 30-minute boat crossing from the El Chaco pier, shelter Humboldt penguins, sea lions, and thousands of Peruvian boobies — earning the area the nickname "Galápagos of Peru."

Hotels concentrate in the El Chaco waterfront zone and the newer Paracas resort strip roughly 2 km north of the pier. El Chaco suits travelers who want walk-to-pier convenience and proximity to Calle del Comercio restaurants. The resort zone offers private beach access along the protected bay. Most visitors arrive for two or three nights, pairing Ballestas boat tours with 4WD excursions into the reserve toward La Catedral rock arch and the ochre cliffs of Punta Arquillo.

• Getting there: Buses from Lima's Javier Prado terminal take roughly 3.5 hours; direct transfers run from Ica (45 minutes).
• Wind: Strong afternoon winds off the bay are normal — book Ballestas boats for early morning departures.
