Sopot: Baltic Resort on Poland's Amber Coast

Sopot sits on the Bay of Gdańsk, 12 km north of Gdańsk's Old Town and 10 km south of Gdynia, forming the middle link of the Trójmiasto (Tricity) conurbation. The city's 511-metre wooden pier — the longest in the Baltic — has anchored seaside life here since 1827. Most hotels cluster along ul. Bohaterów Monte Cassino, the pedestrianised main strip running from the railway station to the pier, and in the quieter Dolny Sopot district closer to the beach. Visitors arrive for the annual Sopot International Song Contest (held since 1961 at the Forest Opera, an open-air amphitheatre seating 5,000), the spa tradition dating to the 1820s, and easy rail access to Gdańsk's Gothic architecture. The SKM commuter rail connects Sopot station to central Gdańsk in around 15 minutes.
