About Lisbon

The most convenient bases in Lisbon are Baixa-Chiado, walkable to the waterfront and main tram lines; Alfama for fado venues and castle views; Príncipe Real for independent boutiques and a quieter residential feel; and Belém, 6 km west along the Tagus, for the Jerónimos Monastery and Torre de Belém. Most visitors stay three to four nights; Humberto Delgado Airport sits 7 km from Baixa, roughly 20 minutes by Metro Red Line.

Where to Stay in Each Quarter

Baixa-Chiado places guests at the foot of Elevador de Santa Justa and within walking distance of the Rossio and Praça do Comércio squares — practical for first-time visitors and those relying on tram 28E. Alfama, Lisbon's oldest district, suits travelers drawn to São Jorge Castle (built 1st century, expanded by Moors in the 9th century) and nightly fado performances; streets are steep and largely car-free. Príncipe Real, uphill from Chiado, offers 19th-century townhouse hotels around a weekly antiques market. Belém works well for families or those visiting the MAAT museum and the 16th-century Mosteiro dos Jerónimos.

Getting Around

The Metro covers four lines and links the airport to Baixa in about 25 minutes for roughly €1.65. Historic tram 28E runs through Alfama and Estrela but is slow and crowded in peak season. Ferries cross the Tagus to Almada every 10–15 minutes from Cais do Sodré, and the Cascais train line from the same terminal reaches Sintra's palaces in 40 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Footwear: Lisbon's cobblestone calçada portuguesa is uneven — pack rubber-soled shoes.
  • Crowds: Alfama and Belém peak June–August; book accommodation at least six weeks ahead.
  • Currency: Portugal uses the euro; ATMs are plentiful throughout Baixa.
  • Fado: Authentic performances in Alfama typically begin after 21:00 and run late.
