About Óbidos
Óbidos: Medieval Walls Above the Oeste Plain
Óbidos sits inside a near-complete set of 12th-century Moorish walls in Portugal's Oeste region, roughly 80 km north of Lisbon. The town passed to Queen Urraca as a wedding gift from King Afonso II in 1228, beginning a royal tradition that lasted five centuries. Today the same cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses trimmed in blue and yellow, and the Castelo de Óbidos — converted into a pousada — draw visitors seeking a medieval streetscape intact enough to feel lived-in rather than reconstructed.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along Rua Direita, the single main street running the length of the vila, and just outside Porta da Vila, the tile-covered main gate. Properties outside the walls offer easier parking and more space; those inside trade convenience for atmosphere. The town hosts the Mercado Medieval each July and a Chocolate Festival each spring, so rooms fill weeks ahead during both events.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses from Lisbon's Campo Grande terminal run roughly every two hours; the journey takes about 75 minutes.
- Ginja: Sample the local cherry liqueur, traditionally served in a chocolate cup at stalls near the gate.
- Parking: Arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends — the car park outside Porta da Vila fills by mid-morning in summer.
- Walls: The full wall circuit on foot takes about 25 minutes; no railings on sections, so watch footing.
