Quinta do Monte

Above Funchal's cable car terminal in the Monte parish, Quinta do Monte occupies a manor estate whose terraced gardens drop toward the bay in layers of hydrangea and banana palms. Monte village sits 550 metres above sea level, roughly six minutes by cable car from the Zona Velha waterfront. The famous Monte toboggan run departs fifty metres from the entrance — a detail no map makes obvious until you hear the wicker sledges pass.
