About Kigali
Kigali: Rwanda's Capital Across Seven Hills
Kigali sits at roughly 1,567 metres above sea level, spread across seven hills in central Rwanda. The city of approximately 1.4 million residents is consistently ranked among Africa's cleanest capitals — plastic bags have been banned since 2008, and monthly community cleaning days (umuganda) are mandated by law. The Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi district preserves the history of the 1994 genocide, receiving over 100,000 visitors annually and standing as the city's most significant historical site.
Where to Stay in Kigali
Hotels concentrate in three main areas. Kiyovu and Nyarugenge hold most business hotels within walking distance of the city centre and Avenue de la Paix. Kimihurura, roughly 4 km east of the CBD, is a quieter diplomatic quarter with mid-range guesthouses and the Kigali Convention Centre nearby. Remera, close to Kigali International Airport (3 km from the terminal), suits transit passengers and early-morning departures.
Practical Tips
- Visa: Most nationalities obtain a 30-day visa on arrival or via the e-visa portal at migration.gov.rw.
- Currency: Rwandan Franc (RWF); ATMs are widely available in Kiyovu and Kimihurura.
- Climate: Temperatures stay between 15 °C and 27 °C year-round; two rainy seasons run March–May and October–December.
- Getting around: Motorcycle taxis (moto-taxis) are the fastest short-haul option; metered taxis are bookable via the Yego Moto app.
