About Apia
Apia: Capital of an Island Nation in the South Pacific
Apia sits on the north coast of Upolu, the most populated island of Samoa, roughly 2,900 km northeast of Auckland. Founded as a trading post in the 19th century, the town became the national capital after Samoa gained independence in 1962 — the first Polynesian nation to do so in the 20th century. The waterfront Beach Road anchors the centre, flanked by the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and the colonial-era Mulinuu Peninsula, where parliament and traditional fale structures stand within walking distance of each other.
Where to Stay in Apia
Most hotels concentrate within 3 km of the central market on Fugalei Street or along Beach Road. Budget guesthouses sit inland near Savalalo Market, while larger properties face the harbour. Day-trippers use Apia as a base for Papapapaitai Falls (15 km south) and Robert Louis Stevenson Museum at Vailima, 4 km uphill from the waterfront — the Scottish author spent his final years here and is buried on Mount Vaea.
Practical Tips
- Currency: Samoan Tālā (WST); ATMs on Beach Road accept Visa and Mastercard.

- Climate: Hot and humid year-round; the dry season runs May to October.
- Ferry access: Inter-island ferry to Savai'i departs Mulifanua Wharf, 35 km west of Apia.
