About Vavau
Vava'u: Coral Anchorages and Humpback Season
Vava'u is an island group in the Kingdom of Tonga — listed under the Samoa region cluster on this platform — comprising roughly 60 islands around the sheltered Port of Refuge harbor. The group sits approximately 250 km north of Tongatapu, Tonga's main island. From July through October, humpback whales migrate through these waters to calve, making Vava'u one of the few places on earth where swimming with humpbacks is permitted under national regulation. Neiafu, the main town on the largest island, anchors daily life with a small waterfront market, fuel docks, and a string of guesthouses and eco-lodges catering to sailors and divers.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Vava'u runs toward small, owner-operated guesthouses and a handful of resort-style lodges on outer islands. Neiafu waterfront puts guests within walking distance of the ferry terminal, provisioning stores, and dive operators. Outer-island properties — reachable by 20-40 minute water taxi — offer reef access directly from the dock. Hotel density is low; advance booking is strongly advised during whale season (July–October) and the regatta weeks held each October.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Lupepau'u Airport (VAV) receives flights from Tongatapu (approx. 1 hour) via Fiji Airways and Real Tonga.
- Currency: Tongan paʻanga (TOP); carry cash as ATM availability outside Neiafu is limited.
- Whale swimming: Book licensed operators weeks ahead — daily group quotas apply under Tonga's whale-watch regulations.
- Season: Flat-calm anchorage conditions prevail May–November; cyclone risk rises December–April.
