About Busan

Busan: South Korea's Port City Between Mountains and Sea

Busan sits at the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula, 325 km from Seoul by KTX rail. The city of 3.4 million is framed by the Nakdong River to the west, the Taebaek Mountains to the north, and 22 km of coastline that runs from Dadaepo Beach through Gwangalli to Haeundae — South Korea's most visited beach. The Jagalchi Fish Market, operating daily since 1945, anchors the working waterfront in the Nam-gu district, where stalls sell live flounder, sea cucumber, and seasonal crab beside a seven-floor covered hall.

Where to Stay in Busan

Hotels concentrate in three zones. Haeundae-gu holds the largest cluster, placing guests within walking distance of the beach and the Bexco convention centre. Seomyeon, the city's central commercial district, offers mid-range hotels close to subway interchanges. Nampo-dong, near Jagalchi and Gukje Market, suits travellers focused on the older port neighbourhoods and the pastel-painted lanes of Gamcheon Culture Village, built on a hillside above the harbour.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: KTX from Seoul Suseo or Seoul Station reaches Busan Station in 2 hr 15 min–2 hr 40 min.
  • Getting around: Busan Metro runs four lines; Line 2 connects Seomyeon to Haeundae in roughly 30 minutes.
  • Weather: Summers are humid (July–August); pack light layers for the sea breeze at Gwangalli in the evenings.
  • Busan International Film Festival runs each October in the Haeundae and Centum City areas.
