About Gyeongju
Gyeongju: Capital of the Silla Kingdom
Gyeongju, 370 km southeast of Seoul in North Gyeongsang Province, served as the capital of the Silla Kingdom for nearly a thousand years (57 BC – 935 AD). The city holds more UNESCO World Heritage sites per square kilometre than almost anywhere in Korea — the Gyeongju Historic Areas gained inscription in 2000. Burial mounds dot the city centre at Tumuli Park, where 23 royal tombs rise up to 22 metres above ground level. The Bulguksa Temple, 15 km east of the city, dates to 528 AD and houses two national treasure stone pagodas.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster around the Bomun Lake Resort zone, 4 km northeast of downtown, where international-brand properties sit alongside traditional hanok-style guesthouses. The downtown area near Nodong-dong offers budget-to-midrange options within walking distance of the tumuli fields and the Gyeongju National Museum, which holds 30,000 Silla artefacts.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: KTX trains reach Singyeongju Station from Seoul in 2 hours; local buses connect the station to downtown in 20 minutes.
- Best season: Spring cherry blossoms peak along Bomun Lake in early April; autumn foliage runs October through November.
- Night cycling: Rental bikes are available near Tumuli Park — the lit burial mounds after dark are a signature experience.
- Entry fees: Bulguksa Temple charges ₩6,000 (approx. USD 4.50) for adults.
