About Barrantes
Barrantes
Barrantes is a rural parish in the municipality of Ribadumia, deep in the Rías Baixas wine country of Galicia, northwest Spain. The village sits within the Salnés Valley — the heartland of Albariño, a white grape variety that has shaped local agriculture and identity for centuries. Stone-walled vineyards, traditional hórreos (raised granaries), and the mild Atlantic climate define the landscape here. The Ría de Arousa, one of Galicia's largest coastal inlets, lies just a few kilometres to the west, making the area a junction between inland wine country and Galician coastal life.
Visitors come primarily for wine tourism. The Rías Baixas DO encompasses five sub-zones, and Val do Salnés — where Barrantes sits — produces the majority of Albariño-labelled bottles exported worldwide. Small family bodegas operate alongside larger estates; several open for tastings and cellar visits. The Camino Portugués coastal route passes through the broader comarca, drawing pilgrims heading north toward Santiago de Compostela, roughly 65 km away.
Accommodation in Barrantes itself is limited to rural guesthouses and agrotourism properties. Ribadumia's main village centre provides local services, while the town of Cambados — 6 km southwest and home to the annual Albariño Wine Festival each August — offers a wider range of hotels and restaurants built around the 17th-century Fefiñáns Palace complex.
