About Cendea de Olza / Oltza Zendea

Cendea de Olza / Oltza Zendea

Cendea de Olza — known in Basque as Oltza Zendea — is a rural municipality in the Cizur comarca of Navarre, roughly 10 kilometres southwest of Pamplona. A cendea is a distinctly Navarrese administrative form: a federation of small villages sharing governance under one municipality. Cendea de Olza groups several hamlets including Asiain, Iza, Laquidáin, Olza, and Sagüés, each retaining its own church and agrarian character. The surrounding landscape is rolling cereal farmland edged by the Sierras of Zariquieta and Alaiz, offering quiet walking routes far from the crowds of San Fermín.

Visitors are mostly walkers, cyclists, and travellers seeking a calm base within easy reach of Pamplona's old city and the Camino de Santiago's Navarrese stage. The French Way passes through this part of Navarre, making the area relevant to pilgrims who prefer rural overnight stops to city hostels. Local architecture centres on Romanesque village churches — the 12th-century church in Asiain is a representative example of the austere stone construction typical of medieval Navarre.

Pamplona's bus network connects the municipality to the regional capital. Accommodation in the immediate area is limited to rural guesthouses; most hotel options are found in Pamplona itself, 10 kilometres northeast via the NA-600 road.
