About el Vendrell
El Vendrell: Birthplace of Pau Casals on the Costa Daurada
El Vendrell sits in the Baix Penedès comarca of Catalonia, roughly 70 km southwest of Barcelona along the AP-7 motorway. The town of around 37,000 residents is best known as the birthplace of cellist Pau Casals (1876–1973), whose family home on Carrer de Santa Anna is now the Casa Museu Pau Casals, open to visitors year-round. The nearby Museu Pau Casals in Sant Salvador — the seafront district 4 km east — extends the tribute with concert halls and personal archives.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster in Sant Salvador and Coma-ruga, two coastal sub-districts with sandy beaches on the Costa Daurada. Inland, the old town offers guesthouses within walking distance of the Plaça Nova market and the 18th-century Basílica de Sant Salvador. The Penedès wine region begins just north, making El Vendrell a practical base for cava and wine-route day trips.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Direct RENFE trains from Barcelona Sants reach El Vendrell in about 55 minutes.
- Beach access: Sant Salvador and Coma-ruga beaches are a 10-minute bus ride from the town centre.
- Best season: July and August bring the Festa Major street celebrations; spring and September offer fewer crowds.
- Wine touring: Allow a half-day for cava cellars around Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, 30 km north.
